Baby Shower History
Although exact dates and origins are unknown, the bestowing of gifts upon a new mother has been notably popular across many cultures for centuries.
In victorian times a pregnant lady seen out in public was frowned upon, therefore it was after the birth that ladies would hold tea parties for the new mother and her baby.
Ladies would bring hand made gifts and grandmothers would traditionally give a gift of silver.
Now in the 21st Century the Americans do it BIG! The baby shower business is most certainly booming-seeing Hollywood a-listers amongst others…striving to outdo each other with their ever more ostentatious parties and gifts.
Katie Price, the wags and the sex and the city girls have all had baby showers, adorning their venues with fun stuff. The nappy cake or baby bouquet was used as the centre piece.
Now hitting the UK – more people are embracing the idea of having a get-together to celebrate all things maternal. Showers are usually held by a female friend or member of the family a couple of months before the mothers due date (you don’t want any surprise deliveries of that sort!).
Also, showers no longer have to be before the birth and we are seeing more people wait till after the birth….this means mum can sit back and enjoy a glass of bubbly! Showers are a great way to get together and share tips, stories and have a bit of fun…before the hard work starts!
